A velvety smooth wine with flavours of juicy dark berry fruits and a touch of spice.
Excellent with steak, lamb and Mediterranean dishes.
Nero d’Avola is one of Sicily’s finest black grape varieties and makes rich, characterful reds. Wines made from this variety have been compared to Shiraz in style, due to the wines deep colour and dark berry fruit flavours, coupled with hints of spice.
The dark skinned Nero d`Avola grape is briefly fermented on its skins to extract colour and flavour and then aged in tank. The resulting wine is bottled early to preserve its juicy fruit driven style.
Blessed with consistently bright sunshine and reliably moderate rainfall, Sicily`s classic Mediterranean climate is ideally suited to the production of grapes. The warm, dry climate means that mildew and rots are kept to a minimum, particularly in well-ventilated areas which benefit from coastal breezes. This low disease pressure means that chemical sprays are hardly needed. Sicily`s soils, and the mountains from which they came, are of particular interest in the island`s viticulture. Mount Etna dominates the island’s eastern skyline, and is responsible for the mineral-rich, dark soils which characterize the region’s vineyards. Vines are now being planted higher up on the volcanic slopes, to capitalize on the cooler air and richer soils there. Sicily has more vineyards than any other region in Italy; it also grows more grapes. The majority of those vineyards raise grapes for marsala, the sweet and dry fortified wine that`s produced in the seaside town of the same name. But in recent years, there`s been a lot of excitement around Sicily`s regular red and white wines, as producers have started focusing on the native grape varieties and the quality of their wines. The Meridia range of Sicilian wines were born out of this interest and growth in Sicilian wines; exclusive to Grape Passions, the wines are modern and fruit driven in style and reflect the unique characteristics of each grape variety. Exceptionally well priced, they offer a great choice to serve by the glass.
