Avondale is a family owned and run wine estate in Paarl, South Africa. The proprietor is Jonathan Grieve, also known as ‘Jonty’. Avondale specialise in top flight extraordinary, wines made with the utmost attention to detail and which are unique in character. Jonty’s Ducks wines are made from grapes grown organically on Avondale’s eco-friendly estate in the picturesque Paarl region of the Cape Winelands located in South Africa. A posse of Pekin ducks patrol the vineyards to find and eat snails which would otherwise cause serious damage to the vines.
The grapes are put into press as whole bunches, and left to settle in tank overnight. The wine is then fermented with wild yeast at between 18 and 24ºC for ageing. A portion was fermented in used oak barrels. Both the tank and barrel portions were kept on the lees for six months and stirred frequently. The barrel portion was blended back.
